Cachaca Duo

Carlos Celis

Carlos was born in Orizaba, Veracruz Mexico. He started exploring the world of music when he was 8 years old playing the piano. It wasn’t until he was 15 that he became interested in the piano accordion. Most of his early experiences of playing in concerts were conducted by Javier Varela, Carlos’s piano and theory teacher for over 10 years.

In 2009 Carlos Celis was invited to play at a music festival and tour for two months in different parts of Switzerland as a part of “Bell canto Veracruz” choir. Carlos’s experiences in concerts, ensembles, orchestras and various music groups have provided him with the musicality needed to create appealing melodies and versatile arrangements.

Carlos came to New Zealand in November 2013, at the moment he works as a music specialist in a Special Needs School learning music therapy and when he is not at work he enjoys sharing his music playing the piano accordion.

CARLOS CELIS (Accordionist)  & LIZ BROOM (Violinist)

Liz Broom

Liz has been a violinist for more than 20 years, initiating and pursuing her music studies privately in New Zealand until leaving the country as a young adult.

As a teenager, she had developed an interest in playing in chamber and orchestral ensembles, and while her university studies in languages and translation would seemingly lead her down a different professional path, her travels to South America eventually led her to north-east Brazil where she took up a position in the state orchestra of Sergipe. She held this position for nearly four years and later became leader of the second violin section.

Upon returning to New Zealand in 2011, she decided to steer her professional focus back to being a linguist, translator and interpreter which is currently her main profession, however her passion for Latin American music and cultures continues to shine through her involvement in various musical ensembles, including traditional Mexican music and other Latin genres.
